Write a summary of the story, "Where are you going, where have you been?"
Show, using evidence from the story, how religion is a recurring motif in the story. For example, explain how certain key words (e.g., church, hell, music, goat, guilt) are woven into the story.
The title of the story suggests a journey. What kind of a journey did Connie take? For example, how does Connie see herself and her mother, at the beginning of the story? How does her view of things change by the story's end? What accounts for that change?

Do Now:
Do you think the media can mix people up?
For example, have you ever heard a song that goes perfectly with the way you might have been thinking or feeling?
Does the feeling, or emotion recognize the song, or does the song create the emotion in the person?
Which do you think comes first: the words you hear in the song or the emotions you were feeling?
How can we know? Is media manipulative?
AIM: Can you find the point in the story where the nightmare ride begins?
See PPT for further analysis
Do the words or lyrics of songs seem to fit into the experience you have in life? Have you ever noticed that a song almost seems too coincidental in the way it matches up to how you feel? How could that be?
AIM: Why is the title of the story written in two parts?

Or were parents more strict?
Were kids more anxious?
AIM: Iago is very manipulating. Nowadays, can too much media mix up and manipulate people the way Iago does?
Why is Connie mixed up? Family, loss of religious values? Media, such as TV and radio?
What is your first impression of Connie? What kind of a teenager is she? If she is a teenager in the mid 1950s, what year might have she been born?
Why doesn't she get along with her sister, June, who was born before the war?
What does she think of her mother?
Why is her father so distant?
Does she dislike her mother that much?
