Sunday In the Park Pre-Reading Activities

Pick a topic card.  Read the topic on the card.  Think about it.  Discuss it briefly with your partner or group.  Write a bullet point list of three to six statements that communicates your ideas and the ideas of your partner or group.  Decide who will represent the group in a share-out. (10 minutes)

Independent Work- Silent Reading: Sunday in the Park by Bel Kaufman (15 minutes)

Exit Slip: Write a paragraph that establishes bullying as the controlling idea.  (By establish we mean define and explain in a way that shows how your general idea of bullying can relate to the plot, characters, or theme in the story).  For extra credit, you may use some of the ideas you have collected about the topic on your card. (15 minutes)

Rubric/Evaluation: Establishes controlling idea and uses evidence from the story to support that idea.  Provides insights that link the story, the controlling idea, and the topic on the card.
